The worldwide release of Valkyrie, Tom Cruise’s latest movie, received significant assistance from an award-winning piece of Kiwi ingenuity. In partnership with Fox International and it’s dubbing partners, local company KIWA International with its VoiceQ DUB software – which was honoured at the 2007 Hollywood Post Alliance Engineering Excellence Awards for “engineering excellence in motion picture post” – was contracted for Valkyrie’s foreign language dubbing, a task it’s specifically optimised for. Although ADR stands for automatic dialogue replacement, there is of course nothing automatic about it, typically involving as it does the process of replacing original dialogue with new studio performances by actors. VoiceQ superimposes over the movie scrolling script that’s in sync with the original dialogue. As a result, actors can focus on performance, engineers on recording and directors on the quality of delivery, while script supervisors are reassured lines are not missed and any changes that are made are entered immediately.  VoiceQ In Action Additionally, if there’s a need for actors to record their lines simultaneously, the script is colour coded for each performer. Initially implemented in a studio in Germany, VoiceQ was also used for the French, Italian, Spanish, Hungarian, Ukraine and Russian versions of the film. Over three months Greg Junovich, a director of KIWA International’s sister company Native Audio, worked and travelled with the Valkyrie International dubbing teams throughout Europe. Although the feedback from the dubbing studios has been, without exception, that the system made for a simplier, quicker process that was embraced by both the actors and the creative language teams, Junovich says he was initially faced with a huge wall of resistance. “There are a lot of people who hate change and many had their own systems and way of doing things,” he notes. “But once the studio experienced the efficiencies and added quality of VoiceQ, we were away, despite the interesting language barriers.” Adds Luke Tomes, chief technical officer at KIWA International, “We are really proud that VoiceQ has become Fox International’s preferred choice of dubbing system – the support means a lot to us.” The goodwill is clearly mutual.  “It was wonderful to work with Luke and Greg, who joined us on the road, as we visited six countries, discussed text and recorded actors, using the VoiceQ system. I have wanted to find a system that is user friendly and can be adapted into the existing recording systems of all or any of the different territories that, in today’s landscape, often need to translate, record and mix simultaneously for day and date releases of major feature films.” Claudia Gvirtzman Dichter | Dubbing Producer, Valkyrie. “It was such a great experience working with VoiceQ,” says Debra Chinn, VP Administration and Operations, Fox International Theatrical. “The VoiceQ process is very efficient and the feedback from the actors is particularly positive. “Post-production dubbing continually changes over the years, but we know the industry is moving toward greater use of digital technology and VoiceQ certainly has a leading role to play in this area. As more studios embrace and adapt to VoiceQ, we will see the benefits both from a creative and commercial perspective. Using VoiceQ on Valkyrie was simply good business.” |
